Carl started trap shooting with his dad, Norris “Chad” Chadwell, in May of 1973, and began registered shooting on March 24, 1974, at the age of ten. He started winning the larger tournaments at the age of 14 and worked up through the ranks of Sub-Junior, Junior, and Adult with great success. On July 11, 1980, at the age of 17, Carl won the President’s Handicap at the Michigan State Shoot with a lone 97 x 100 from 25 ½ yards and reached the 27 yard line.

Carl made the Michigan All-State Team 10 times: 1980 – 81 – 82 – 84 – 87 – 88 – 89 – 90 – 91 – 92 and was selected for the All-American Team 3 times: 1979, 1980, & 1981.
Carl led Wolverine Doubles averages in 1989 and 1991, and he was the first shooter in Michigan history to average 96% or higher in doubles two years in a row (1990 & 1991). At the time of his induction, Carl had attained AA-27-AA status five times (1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, & 1992).
