After competing in registered skeet during 1971, 1972, and 1973 and winning Michigan State Championships in 1973, Richard started trapshooting in 1974. By the end of 1974, he was on the 27 yard line. His first 100 straight came soon after in a 16-yard event at the Grand American. His first 200 straight was at the 1977 Michigan State Shoot.
Richard’s trapshooting accomplishments are numerous and a few of the most significant are:
Member of the First Team All-American Team in 1992
Member of the Michigan All-State Team every year since 1977 (except 1981 when work obligations prevented his shooting enough targets to qualify). He was Captain on two occasions.
Won his first Grand American trophy in 1981 – Class A Doubles. Richard added 3 more Grand American Trophies in 1992 and 1994.
Won six Satellite Grand American trophies from 1988-1995
Has thirteen Michigan State Shoot wins –
High Over-All in 1982, 1985, 1988, and 1993
High All-Around in 1987, tying a state record with 394
State Doubles Champion in 1985 with 100 x100
Class AA Singles Champion in 1988 and 1995
Won ATA Central Zone High All-Around and Doubles Championship in 1994
A member of two 500 Straight Squads, one at the Grand American and one at the Ohio State Shoot
To date, Richard has broken thirty-five 200 straights in Singles and seven 100 straights in Doubles.
